What to gather before a Self Assessment appointment
A practical list of papers and statements that shorten a tax consultation and reduce follow-up emails.
A Personal Tax Planning Consultation or Self Assessment Filing Support engagement moves faster when the right papers arrive before the meeting. Clients who wait until the call itself often spend the first half hour reconstructing figures from memory.
Core employment and pension papers
Bring your latest P60, any P45 from a job change in the tax year, and P11D forms if your employer reports benefits. Pension providers usually issue an annual statement showing contributions and any free-of-tax amounts — those figures matter when we discuss annual allowance headroom.
Savings, dividends, and interest
Bank interest certificates or year-end online summaries help us check Personal Savings Allowance usage. Dividend vouchers or broker statements should cover each holding disposed of or paying income. If you use a stocks and shares ISA, note that explicitly so we do not treat those dividends as taxable.
Property income
Landlords should gather rent schedules, agent statements, mortgage interest summaries, and invoices for repairs. Distinguishing capital improvements from revenue repairs is one of the most common corrections we make during filing support.
What can wait
Perfect formatting is unnecessary. A labelled folder of PDFs is enough. If a document is missing, list the gap — we would rather plan around an absence than discover it mid-consultation.
